What Is Bocce Ball?
Bocce is a centuries-old game that traces its roots back to ancient Roman times. It can be played in teams or by individuals, and the game’s goal is for players to roll their bocce (or ‘boccino’) balls as close as possible to a designated target ball. The team or individual with the ball closest to the target ball is awarded points.
While the game may have evolved over time, the spirit of bocce remains unchanged. It’s a great way to relax and spend quality time with friends or family – all while mastering your skills in this beloved Italian game.
How to Play Bocce
Bocce rules are fairly simple. The court is typically 60 feet long by 12 feet wide, although the playing area can be tailored to fit smaller spaces. A bocce court should also be level and smooth, such as a grassy lawn.
- Each team or individual player has four bocce balls that they must roll towards the target (‘pallino’) ball. If you’re playing in teams of two, each teammate will have two bocce balls; if you’re playing in teams of four, each teammate will have one bocce ball.
- Bocce has several frames, and which team begins first is decided with a coin toss. The frames start with the pallino being tossed by a team toward the opposite end of the bocce court. The frame is complete after all bocce balls have been thrown and points awarded.
- Balls must be rolled or tossed underhand, starting from behind the foul line. If a bocce ball lands out of bounds, it is removed from play, and the opposing team begins its turn.
- Once the pallino is in position, the first team throws their bocce balls. Taking alternate turns, each team tries to get their bocce balls closest to the pallino, move the pallino ball closer to their bocce ball or move their opponents’ bocce ball away from the pallino.
- The team or individual with their bocce ball closest to the pallino is awarded points for that frame.
